How do I claim the $1,000?

Children born 2025 to 2028 may receive a one time federal contribution. It needs to be claimed correctly by the right parent.

The rules at a glance

Six things every parent should know

  • Who can have one: any child under 18 with a Social Security number. No earned income required.
  • The $1,000 seed: for eligible U.S. citizen children born January 1, 2025 through December 31, 2028, claimed by the parent who claims the child as a dependent.
  • Annual limit: up to $5,000 per year combined from parents, relatives, friends, and the child. Indexed for inflation after 2027.
  • Employers can help: up to $2,500 a year within the cap. Ask HR about it.
  • How it is invested: low cost funds tracking U.S. stock indexes, with capped fees.
  • Access and taxes: locked until 18, then traditional IRA rules generally apply. Growth is tax deferred; earnings are taxed as ordinary income at withdrawal.

The honest take

A great start. Rarely the whole answer.

For eligible newborns, a Trump Account is free money every family should claim. But it has real limits: the $5,000 cap, restricted investment menus, no access before 18, and ordinary income tax on growth at withdrawal.

That is why most families we work with treat it as one layer of a bigger plan, alongside custodial accounts and cash value life insurance that add flexibility and protection, where eligible and appropriate.

Trump Account FAQ

Questions parents ask us every week

My child was born before 2025. Are they left out?
Not at all. Any child under 18 with a Social Security number may be able to open a Trump Account and receive up to $5,000 per year in contributions. They simply do not receive the $1,000 federal seed, which is limited to births from 2025 through 2028.
Do I have to pay taxes on the account?
Contributions are made with after tax money and are not taxed again at withdrawal. Investment growth compounds tax deferred inside the account, and earnings are taxed as ordinary income when they are eventually withdrawn, generally under traditional IRA rules once your child is an adult. Full tax breakdown here.
Can grandparents or my employer contribute?
Yes. Parents, relatives, friends, and even the child can contribute, and employers may add up to $2,500 per year, all within the combined $5,000 annual limit.
Can we take the money out for an emergency?
Generally no. Withdrawals are not permitted before age 18, which is part of why we help families build a plan with additional, more flexible layers alongside the Trump Account.
What does your guidance cost?
The consultation is free. We earn our living from the insurance and investment products families choose to implement with us, and we are always transparent about that.
